Every Catalog Has an Edge

Queristo's expert catalog is broad. Foundation Experts, five Business Function Experts, and more than twenty Industry-Specific verticals cover the overwhelming majority of organizational knowledge-work needs.

But every catalog has an edge. And for some organizations, that edge is exactly where their most important work happens.

If your organization operates in a niche vertical that no standard industry expert covers with sufficient depth. Or if your internal workflows, regulatory environment, or proprietary knowledge base are genuinely unique, a Custom Expert is not a luxury. It is the tier that makes the panel complete.

What Makes a Requirement "Custom"

Custom Expert engagements are appropriate when one or more of the following conditions apply:

The industry gap. Your vertical is not covered by any existing Industry-Specific Expert, or the existing expert covers your industry at a level of generality that does not serve your specific practice area. A general Health Care expert may not be sufficient for a specialized long-term care operator. A general Financial Activities expert may not serve the nuanced needs of an Islamic finance institution.

The workflow gap. Your organization has proprietary internal processes — methodologies, taxonomies, decision frameworks, escalation protocols — that are unique to your company and not representable by any general-purpose domain knowledge. A standard expert trained on industry knowledge cannot replicate knowledge that exists only inside your organization.

The data gap. Your knowledge base contains proprietary content, research, product documentation, historical case files, and technical specifications that would significantly improve AI performance if the expert were trained on it. Fine-tuning a Custom Expert on this data gives you an AI that knows your business the way a long-tenured subject matter expert would.

The compliance gap. Your regulatory environment is sufficiently specialized that standard domain knowledge creates unacceptable risk of imprecision. Certain defense contractors, clinical research organizations, and financial infrastructure operators fall into this category.

How a Custom Expert Is Built

A Custom Expert engagement follows a structured development process. This is not a configuration exercise; it is a collaborative build.

Step 1: Requirements Gathering

The engagement begins with structured stakeholder interviews. Queristo's team works with your subject matter experts, department leads, and technical stakeholders to define:

  • The specific use cases the Custom Expert will serve
  • The knowledge domains it needs to cover
  • The user population that will interact with it
  • The performance standards it must meet

This step prevents the most common failure mode in custom AI development: building a solution to a problem that has not been precisely defined.

Step 2: Domain Specification

Once requirements are gathered, Queristo produces a domain specification document that articulates:

  • The boundaries of the expert's knowledge (what it should know, what it should defer)
  • The terminology and frameworks it should reason within
  • The escalation logic for queries that exceed its scope
  • The safety and compliance parameters it must operate under

The domain specification serves as the contract between your organization and the development team. It is the document against which the expert's performance will be measured.

Step 3: Data Inventory

Custom Experts derive much of their value from fine-tuning on proprietary data. This step involves a structured audit of the data assets your organization can make available:

  • Internal policy documents and process manuals
  • Product documentation and technical specifications
  • Historical case files, decisions, and resolution logs
  • Proprietary research or analytical frameworks
  • Brand voice and communication guidelines

Data is reviewed for quality, coverage, and licensing before it is used in fine-tuning. Your proprietary data never leaves your private cloud environment during this process.

Step 4: Development and Fine-Tuning

With the domain specification confirmed and the data inventory complete, Queristo develops the Custom Expert using one of its small-footprint base models — optimized for efficiency without sacrificing depth. The fine-tuning run adapts the model to your domain, your data, and your performance requirements.

Development is iterative. Intermediate builds are shared with your team for testing and feedback before the expert moves to production.

Step 5: Performance Testing and Validation

Before deployment, the Custom Expert is tested against the performance targets defined in the domain specification. Testing includes:

  • Accuracy benchmarking on domain-specific question sets
  • Hallucination rate assessment
  • Escalation logic validation
  • Compliance parameter verification

The expert is not deployed until it meets the agreed performance targets.

The Graduation Path

Depending on the nature of the Custom Expert and the terms of your agreement with Queristo, a successfully deployed Custom Expert may be eligible for graduation into the Industry-Specific catalog.

Graduation means that your Custom Expert — built on your requirements and validated by your real-world use — becomes available as a standard offering for other organizations in the same vertical. This benefits the broader Queristo ecosystem, and in some cases, creates commercial value for your organization as well.

Custom Is Not Complexity for Its Own Sake

It is worth being explicit: Custom Expert engagements are not appropriate for every organization, and Queristo does not recommend them when a standard tier will serve your needs. Business Function Experts and Industry-Specific Experts cover the large majority of enterprise requirements.

The Custom tier exists because some organizations have genuinely unique requirements, and forcing those requirements into a standard catalog would mean accepting a performance ceiling that the organization should not have to accept.

When a Custom Expert is the right answer, it is clearly the right answer. The requirements gathering process is designed to make that determination early, so that development only begins when both parties are confident it is justified.

What a Custom Expert Delivers

The result of a successful Custom Expert engagement is an AI that knows your business the way a highly experienced, deeply knowledgeable practitioner would — except available instantly, at scale, inside your private cloud, governed by your team.

It does not hallucinate your proprietary processes. It does not confuse your taxonomy with industry-standard terminology. It does not treat your unique workflow as an edge case that the general model cannot handle.

It simply knows your business. And it answers accordingly.
